Insider’s Tour of a Japanese supermarket:

Have you ever been to a Japanese supermarket and felt completely lost?  No worries, I’ll serve as your Japanese shopping guide.  We will meet in front of Nijiya market in Little Tokyo where I’ll walk you through the market and introduce you to some of my favorite Japanese seasonings and fresh produce to make Okonomiyaki from scratch! If you want to learn more about Japanese ingredients, this tour is for you.

Ingredients list: Pork, Seafood, Mochi, Cheese, Cabbage, Scallions, Naga-Imo, Dried shrimp, Tenkasu, flour, Eggs, Kombu, Bonito flakes, Nori, Spinach, Corn, Fruit, Kanten powder, Okonomi sauce

Okonomiyaki:

It is one of the most popular and beloved foods from Osaka: A savory pancake packed with lots of vegetables.  You also have the option of adding your favorite toppings such as pork belly, shrimp, squid, mochi, cheese, noodles....anything you like! That’s where the word “okonomi” comes from: made to suit your own taste! We eat this pancake with a special sweet sauce and mayonnaise, with or without mustard, and topped with bonito flakes. Mhhh, Yum!
I have yet to come across one person who doesn’t like this pancake!

Since it creates a really easy, well-balanced and complete meal, Japanese families make this pancake for lunch and dinner. It is easy to make by yourself once you learn how. This is true 30 minute cooking!

Cooking Class Content:

  • How to make Japanese soup stock that’s at the heart of all Japanese cooking. (Yes, this pancake does use the delicious broth called “Dashi” full of uma
  • Variations of Okonomiyaki with different toppings
  • The traditional way of making okonomiyaki and the fast way of making it
