A 10 week course in Scratch programming for 5th through 12th graders.
The instructor is Meryl van der Merwe who was a programmer for many years and now teaches programming classes to middle and high schoolers. She has also taught her own children to program and two are now majoring in Computer Science at Stanford and NYU.
The class will consist of a video for each week and a programming assignment. Students will also be able to join a Google Hangout to ask questions and get clarification on anything they are struggling with. A Google + account is necessary for a student to be able to join in a Hangout. At least two different times will be offered each week. The work will take about 2 hours each week. Unless the students choose to spend more time, of course.
Scratch is free to download. An optional book will be assigned which can be purchased from Amazon, but it is not necessary to have it. Scratch runs on Macs and PCs
Once a student has registered, they will be emailed the information on how to join the class. It will be run through Edmodo.
What a former student has to say about this class: It
was a great class and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is
interested in programming or would just like a fun class that will help
your logical thinking.
