"Dirty Laundry" - Paintings by Lun*na Menoh

The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition in the new SPARC Gallery of the work of Lun*na Menoh.

Lun*na Menoh is a Japanese-born performance artist living and working in Los Angeles. Her multi-layered works engage a variety of media - music, sculpture, painting, and fashion - exposing the invisible threads and interconnections between the visual arts, performance and Haute Couture.

Beginning in 1999, Menoh created a series of conceptual paintings, depicting dirty white collars from different eras against a stark black background.  Blending traditional still life painting with surrealist strategies involving visual paradox, alienation and surprise juxtapositions, Menoh turns viewer's expectation on its ear.  Her complex and witty paintings frequently reference famous images of writers, activists and musicians, like David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Prince, Sigmund Freud, Roland Barthes, and Malcolm X.

SPARC Gallery, located at 1121 Mission Street @ South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, is pleased to present a small selection of Menoh's mesmerizing and deeply engaging canvases in a small exhibition entitled "Dirty Laundry" - Paintings by Lun*na Menoh from March 26 through May 1, 2015.  The show opens to the public with a free reception on March 26, from 5-7PM. Opening Reception @ Gallery sponsored by Collette Leboffe-Dorn, Podley Properties.

Immediately following, SPARC is hosting a fast-paced gallery benefit/fundraiser, co-chaired by Lorraine Triolo and Kathryn Compton at Burke-Triolo Studio, 538 Mission Street, from 7-10 PM, featuring Menoh's acclaimed performance "Art Fashion Show" of highly conceptual, but wearable outfits, presented to the music of her band, Les Sewing Sisters.   After the performance, acclaimed South Pasadena Jazz musician, composer, and DJ extraordinaire Adam Dorn, a.k.a. Mocean Worker, will spin music to dance and lounge to.
