The Future is Now: Libraries and Museums in Virtual Worlds

  • The ALA VCL MIG (Virtual Communities and Libraries, Member Initiative Group) is organizing and sponsoring a conference ("The Future is Now: Libraries and Museums in Virtual Worlds") to be held online (using webconferencing software) and in various virtual worlds, especially ALA Island in Second Life, on Friday and Saturday, March 5th & 6th, 2010.
  • Most of the main events (presentations, panel discussions, etc.) will be held in the OPAL webconferencing system, which offers a low tech bar and a "neutral" ground in which librarians and museum staff members can explore and discuss the possibilities for libraries, museums, and other cultural organizations in virtual worlds.
  • During this two-day conference we also will offer tours, demonstrations, poster sessions, social gatherings, and other events in Second Life and other virtual worlds. For the conference-related events and gatherings in Second Life, we will use ALA Island as the primary venue.
