The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 469 miles from North Carolina to Virginia through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Eastern United States. The Parkway is part of the National Park system and has been called "America's Favorite Drive".

I've explored several sections of the parkway in North Carolina over the last few years, and I would like to share some of my favorite locations with you this June. I've enlisted the help of my friend, photographer and Boone, NC native Edgar Payne. We have a lot of great ideas for making great photos along the Parkway between Boone and Linville North Carolina.

We have chosen June 20-22 in order to (nature permitting) capture the rhododendrons in bloom. Edgar and I will be scouting locations for the workshop in the days leading up to the event so that we take you to the best spots for rhododendrons, wild flowers, waterfalls and more.

The final itinerary will be set based on the flowers and the weather, but here are just a few of the photo opportunities we are planning to share with you:

  • Grandfather Mountain
  • Linn Cove Viaduct
  • Rough Ridge Overlook
  • Linnville Falls
  • Dugger's Creek Falls
  • Moses Cone Manor
  • Wiseman's View

We have MANY other ideas that we will explore in the days before the event so that we offer you the best opportunities for making beautiful photos.

This workshop is an opportunity for you to improve your photography and add to your skill set. I will be offering suggestions for taking advantage of each location.

Specific presentation topics include:

  • Shooting and stitching for panoramas
  • Natural looking HDR
  • Optical filters for controlling dynamic range
  • Composition for landscape photography
  • Adding video clips to your still photography for more engaging slideshows
  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and ProShow Web tips during live demonstrations

What to bring:

Please bring your favorite camera, together with any lenses you want to shoot with (both wide angle and tele-photo), plenty of charged battery packs and memory cards, a sturdy tripod and a laptop computer for downloading images.

Skill level:

A firm understanding of your camera operations, including using manual mode, f-stops and shutter speed is needed. This workshop is for intermediate and advanced photographers. The workshop is organized to avoid strenuous hiking, but some moderate hiking will be involved.

Included in the workshop fee:

  • One breakfast and one lunch
  • LUMIX gear loans
  • Any applicable park entry fees

The workshop fee includes breakfast on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. We will meet at the Pineola Inn at 2:00 on Friday, June 20. We will head out to shoot as soon as everyone gets checked in and ready to go. We will have a classroom session at the hotel on Sunday after lunch and plan to wrap the event by 3:00.
